A few months ago we posted an image of a very, very badly damaged Persian Kirman carpet. We collected it from our client in central London and it has been in their family for generations – so has a massive amount if sentimental value attached.
The carpet was threadbare, very badly worn sides, fringes badly damaged and the field (main carpet area) was almost through to the foundation (cotton base) in large sections.
We wanted to post this blog on Persian rug cleaning to let our clients know the importance of a good professional and careful hand clean every 5 to 10 years. This carpet had not been washed in a very, very long time and this almost certainly added to, or exacerbated the level if damage from footfall.
A professional rug clean will not only make an oriental rug look better, it should penetrate into the foundations of the rug. Dirt, silk and grime build up over the years and lay deep down inside the rug. Conventional vacuum cleaners and beaters really are not strong enough to such this out through the, often dense, pile of the handmade rug. This can become abrasive, like a fine sandpaper working away at the base of the wools with every footstep.
Our traditional Persian rug cleaning technique has been tried and tested for generations, completely removing the silt that lies within the rug as the first actio point. It is not uncommon for us to collect cupful upon cupful of dark dust and silt from even a small rug.
Once this is exctracted, we simply use soft brushes and vegetable shampoos to gently wash the woolen pile. It is important to check the carpet for colour run first, so we test this before starting the wash. It is also vitally important that for a traditional Persian rug clean that the rug is left to dry in the ambient air – NOT with any chemicals or heat – EVER!
