As many of our readers know – we are specialise in Persian rug repair and Oriental rug repair. We were recently invited to assess a handmade Persian Heriz rug in the New Town of Edinburgh. Its construction was wool on a cotton foundation, finely knotted and had been in the family since the early fifties – we would call this a semi-antique or vintage as its known now. On first inspection the rug needed a dust extraction and specialist hand wash. Our client admitted that the rug had probably never been professionally cleaned and certainly not dust extracted.
Removing dust from a handmade rug is essential. It is the fine dust at the base of the rugs that vacuuming cannot remove, that becomes abrasive and thins the rug out through time and reduces the life of the rug dramatically. When we removed the rug from under a very heavy bed, we realised that it had been badly damaged by moths, an area that was difficult to get to with a vacuum cleaner.Fortunately, the warp and weft (foundation) was still intact, so a reweave of the wool pile (or knots) was all that was necessary in the damaged areas.
The rug was taken to one of our workshops and dust extracted immediately and we applied a rug moth proof solution. This not only removed the dust but also removed moth eggs which can survive after a wash.Using organic shampoos and cold water, we professionally hand cleaned the rug which immediately brightened it and gave the colours fantastic definition. It was allowed to dry naturally to avoid distortion, then given a moth treatment. The damaged areas were rewoven using wools imported from Iran and colour matched to ensure a perfect restoration.
Our client was delighted when the rug was returned a few weeks later and more than happy to give us other rugs from Afghanistan and India that they had discovered had also been damaged in the same way. Our methods are traditional and repairs blend perfectly with the existing rug ensuring the look and value are maintained.
